Does the trail come in from outside, or does it start inside?
Follow the line to the wall and watch where it disappears. If it emerges from a threshold, a window frame, a weep hole, or a gap where the siding meets the foundation, the colony is outdoors and your building is being visited. If it emerges from a baseboard on an interior wall, from around a plumbing penetration under a sink, from a ceiling edge, or from behind an outlet cover on an internal partition — the colony is inside your structure, and that is a completely different problem.
The distinction changes everything downstream. An outdoor colony visiting through a gap is largely an exclusion and perimeter job, frequently resolved for the season with a sealed threshold and one bait placement. An indoor colony is nesting in a void, and something in that void is supporting it — almost always moisture. That's a building fault with ants attached to it.
Most ant treatment never asks the question. It sprays the visible line, which works against neither case and actively makes several species worse.

What's supporting itAlmost always moisture. Carpenter ants excavate wood that's already softened, so a nest inside a structure sits in timber that's damp for a reason — a roof or gutter leak, failed flashing around a chimney or dormer, a leaking window or door frame, a plumbing leak in a wall, crawlspace condensation, poor drainage at the foundation, or a chronically wet sill plate. Pharaoh ants favour warm humid voids near plumbing and heating runs.
Counterintuitive enough that most people do it anyway.
It's a foraging route, and the ants on it are non-reproductive workers — a small fraction of the total. Killing them changes nothing about the colony's capacity.
An outdoor colony reroutes to another entry. An indoor colony reroutes within the wall, frequently emerging somewhere you can't see.
Pharaoh ants most notoriously, and several others behaviourally, respond to chemical stress by splitting and dispersing queens and brood to new locations. This is the specific mechanism behind "it got worse after I sprayed" — and it converts an indoor colony problem into several.
Bait works because the trail survives. Slow-acting material carried home and shared by mouth-to-mouth feeding among workers, brood, and queens. That reaches the reproductive core, and it only happens if the ants keep walking.
Which means: once bait is placed, leave the trail alone. Don't wipe it, don't spray near it, don't tidy it up. More ants around a placement in the first day or two is the treatment working.
One thing you can safely do before we arrive: wipe the trail with soapy water rather than spraying. That removes the pheromone without leaving a repellent barrier that would interfere with bait later.
